Midsummer feasting, doughnuts pop-ups and proper bagels
A short and sweet summery news fix this week
News this week is coming to you from a field in Wicklow - I’m on the stunning grounds of the Glendalough Estate setting up for Beyond The Pale where I programme and host a food and drink stage called Beyond The Plate. The weather is looking good and I have a bunch of legends joining me across the weekend (take a look at the timetable here). I’m also very much looking forward to trying Bahay’s Midsummer Feast, their first-ever sit-down festival situation which looks like it will be a lot of fun. If you’re here this weekend please do come and say hi!
I’ve lots to prep before we kick off this afternoon but I couldn’t leave you without a bit of food news and there’s some other fun stuff happening this weekend too.
If I wasn’t in Wicklow I would be making a beeline for uber cool Indigo & Cloth in Temple Bar on Saturday for their latest version of ‘The Stand’ their pop-up, collaborative project. This time it’s from Belfast-based chef, curator & artist Philly McCrilly and he’s doing doughnuts with incredible sounding fillings. See more here.
More brilliant book news, Brigid O’Hora, better known as Bridey’s Wine Chats on Insta, announced her debut book coming in October, The Home Sommelier. It’s available for preorder now.
If you’re looking for proper bagels in Dublin check out this piece from the Dublin Inquirer about Fat Baby Bakes.
I love the sound of Rolls a new summer pop-up in Howth serving seasonal seafood rolls.
A keen reader (thanks Quigo!) spotted a couple of new southside openings - tapas in Dun Laoghaire - Dope Tapas and nearer to Monkstown - Lucas coffee shop and wine bar.
Join Kevin Sheridan & Enrico Fantasia for a special Aperitivo evening on June 28th.
Excellent news for Baltimore and all of Ireland really, Ahmed Dede, chef proprietor of the two Michien-starred restaurant Dede is opening a new spot next door.
If you are visiting Cork over the summer and love whiskey a visit to The Midleton Distillery Experience is always great and they’ve just added a new cocktail-making class as part of the visitor experience.
If you’re going to be in Kerry, seek out Órale for delicious Mexican-inspired street food. They’ve set up their truck on the Ring of Kerry in Castlecove beside a pub called An Siopa Dubh.
If you happen to be in Berlin, check out Oisin Davis’ Poitín party on June 29th.
Dolly Parton & Chardonnay? Yes, please.
Ever wondered what’s the difference between Bulmers and Magners?
